FAQ on Certification

Does the IREB Recognize Certificates Issued earlier?

CPRE certificates issued by ASQF (Germany) before 1 January 2007 can be exchanged by a certifier licensed by the IREB (no charge). You can find a list of licensed certifiers at Validity of Certificates.

What Is a Foundation Level Exam Like?

The exam itself takes 75 minutes. In this time you have to answer 45 multiple choice questions. The questions are of differing difficulty and therefore assigned differing amounts of points. The exam is closed-book, i.e. no materials are allowed to be used. To pass the exam, the examinee must achieve more than 60% of the total score possible. The exam is overseen by a licensed certification body.

How Do I know whether I Have passed the Exam?

The results are sent by the certification body to the address stated by the examinee at the application via mail. If you have passed the exam, you receive you certificate together with the results.

If you take the exam online you get your results right after the examination. The certificate will be delivered to you via mail. The certificates achieved via online exam are dispatched within the same time as the results of conventional exams are sent.

What Requirements Are there for the Exam to Become a Certified Professional for Requirements Engineering at Foundation Level?

To pass the exam, one has to demonstrate mastery of the material covered by the syllabus for the Foundation Level certificate. Having taken a course is not a requirement for admission to the exam but is recommended by the IREB, with a recognized training provider.

When taking a course with a training provider not recognized by the IREB, there is no guarantee they are in line with the IREB syllabus.
Please bring valid proof of identity (ID card or passport) to the exam.

How long will my Issued Certificate be Valid?

The (legally) obtained CPRE certificate is valid your whole life.

How Can I Apply for the Exam?

Please visit the website of one of the certification bodies recognized for your country. A list of recognized certifiers can be found at Certification/Certification Bodies. At the certifiers' websites you can find time and date of upcoming exams as well as information on the application process.

The exams are either conducted publicly by the certifier or right after a training. You can also take the exam with a training provider without having been to a training. If you wish to do so please also turn to Certification/Certification Bodies in order to check upcoming exam dates.

Which IREB Certificates are already being issued?

At this time, only the certificate for CPRE Foundation Level is being issued. CPRE Advanced Level is in preparation. This certificate is expected to be issued from the 4th quarter of 2010 on.
